Sermon Series: The Essence of Christmas

Presence is the Real Present

Even those who do not consider him the Son of God love the Christmas infant in the manger, because he seems so approachable. Yet, we sometimes struggle to identify with the man, Jesus, because we regard him as superhuman and out of our reach. In truth, the problem is that we have become subhuman and less alive than God created us to be. Paul teaches us not only that Jesus has appeared to us as the very essence of God (Philippians 2:6), but also that we have sensed in him the true humanity to which God has called us (2 Corinthians 3:18). This calling from Jesus is not to deny our sensation of the world, but to live abundantly as the essence of God to others. Christmas is about abundant presence, not bountiful presents.
